Meditation is a practice that has been around for thousands of years to help people take a break and help themselves relax.  Mindfulness meditation however, is a specific type of meditation that has recently been growing quickly in popularity.  Mindfulness meditation is not new, as it originated long ago within the Buddhist practice.  However recently it has recently taken on a new and broader life being employed by folks around the globe outside any religious practice.  Many who use mindfulness meditation  today for stress reduction report being both happier and healthier, as it helps reduce symptoms of stress and the health problems that can be associated with them.

Those who have never heard the term “mindfulness meditation” may not understand why it’s such a big deal, or even what it means.  The word “mindfulness” describes the act of being aware and living in the present, rather than letting their mind wander to regrets or worries about the future.  “Meditation” is a much more well-known term, describing the act of thinking deeply or focusing on one’s own mind for a long period of time.  Put the two terms together, and you get “mindfulness meditation,” which involves techniques that work to reduce stress by increasing acceptance of one’s own thoughts and feelings.

Many are skeptical of the actual effectiveness of the practice, but studies have shown that it truly does work.  Dr. Elizabeth Hoge, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and the assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, conducted a study to show the effects of mindfulness-based meditation, using a test group of people with generalized anxiety disorder.  She found that this type of meditation is shown to work better overall than other general stress management techniques, reducing anxiety symptoms like high amounts of worrying, sleeplessness, and irritability.  Even for people without anxiety disorders or depression, mindfulness meditation has been shown to reduce stress well.

When doing mindfulness meditation, the person sits comfortably, concentrates on their breathing, and thinks of the present moment.  They keep their mind away from thinking about what could happen in the future, or what they have done in the past.  When starting out, there are guided recordings online that can be listened to, if you choose. Many cities throughout the United States now also offer mindfulness-based stress reduction training using techniques developed by medical professionals, which is an option for those who wish to gain a more in-depth knowledge of the techniques and strategies used in the practice.  Some people also find that practicing mindfulness-based meditation with others in a group can be very helpful, which is a good option to try as well.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a simple way to calm yourself, increase your personal happiness, and make your quality of life better overall, mindfulness meditation could be the option for you.  It’s easy to get started, and for those with anxiety disorders, depression, or just those who experience stress that they would like to reduce, it can be extremely helpful.  Even if you only meditate for a few minutes a day, you can begin to see its positive effects in your mood and your thoughts.
