Stress Relief

Does your healthcare provider recommend you practice yoga for stress relief and to avoid burnout?  If not, they should!

An insightful new theory put forth in the journal Medical Hypotheses explains why.  The article, authored by a collaboration of psychiatrists, reviews recent studies into the nerve-physical-body connection, and the effects that yoga has on the body.  In fact, their hypothesis is that the poses performed in yoga are able to structurally realign parts of the body’s neuroanatomy.  This realignment balances brain and nerve tissues that are over or under stimulated.

stress helpLet’s break it down.  An oversimplified explanation is this; there are two branches of the nervous system, one branch is further sub-divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, collectively called the Autonomic system. The Parasympathetic Nervous System (picture the brakes on a car) creates the ‘rest and digest’ response.  When activated, the parasympathetic system causes the body to relax, digest food, and repair itself.

The Sympathetic Nervous System on the other hand (picture the accelerator on a car) is known for the ‘fight or flight’ response.  When it is activated, the body increases its heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormones in order to run from or fight a predator.

The parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems talk to the body via nerves originating in the brain. According to the proposed theory, when these nerves become kinked or pinched due to poor body alignment, one system may become over or under stimulated.  If the sympathetic system is out of balance and activated more than the parasympathetic system, hypertension, anxiety, depression, poor digestion, and other problems can occur.

Yoga, these researchers hypothesize, re-balances the body’s Autonomics by removing any obstructions to proper nerve signaling.

Are there any supporting studies or is this just woo woo science?  Check out part 2 in my next blog post.
